Starting in early 2021, TONIX has risen in Adelaide, Australia, inspired by M83’s emotional "Hurry Up We're Dreaming" album, and the live energy and passion of artists like LCD Sound System/ The Presets/ The Comet is Coming. Underpinned by hand-mastered synthesizer sounds, the group has become known for their energetic shows.
Henry and Archie, as TONIX founders, began by habitually busking in front of crowds in excess of 30,000 on Adelaide’s iconic River Torrens Footbridge after AFL matches from 2018 - 2022. The pair then switched to making music under the name Tonix, where they rose in the performance and festival space.
After releasing their debut single PEGS, TONIX achieved #1 placement on the Triple J Unearthed charts for over 3 weeks where it downloaded over 2000 times. It was named as “one of the best debuts of 2021” by What’ s New On the Scene magazine, with American reviewer Moanbarrow writing, “Tonix has done something pretty darn unique. [PEGS] is a product of great mixing and talent.” ERA, as a follow up single, explored the techno side of TONIX. The critically aclaimed music video soon became a hit after its release one week later.
In 2022, TONIX composed, recorded, and edited their debut EP, "When We Are," featuring Sammi Keough on vocals for the first time. The first instalment, "Stars That Hold Us," quickly made a big impact, with radio features around Australia, the music video being featured by ABC's Rage program, and press coverage reaching Spain. The second single, "Overflow," has also seen radio success alongside a RAGE feature for the official video. The final two songs, "In This Lifetime," and the title track, "When We Are," are out now.
TONIX were selected for the Indie-Con adjacent Scouted showcase in August 2023 produced by MusicSA and impressed all. On the back of that show, they were offered a recording contract and were signed by management, General Admission Entertainment. MusicSA CEO, Christine Schloithe, called the showcase performance, “near perfect,” one that, “captured the attention of the national industry in a way that rarely happens.” TONIX have won fans with each show and are on track to make an impression on a national level after a series of high profile supports for artists such as Boo Seeka and Tijuana Cartel, festival bookings alongside artists as diverse as Rudimental, DMAs, Winston Surfshirt, Bad//Dreems, Regurgitator, Cub Sport and The Smith Street Band and their debut headline show in December 2023 to over 200 ticket buyers at UniBar ADL. TONIX have played headline timeslots for locally produced festivals including Space Jams, IndieFest (alongside Felivand) and the Pirate Life Brewery birthday weekend. 2024 will see TONIX continue to refine their stage craft, record and release new singles and a second self-funded, independent EP and, under the guidance of new management, showcase at BigSound and SXSW Sydney.
In 2023, while managing their final year of studies, the four-piece played 8 shows in 7 venues. With a packed out room for their final show of the year, SGF was symbolic of Tonix's successful year despite balancing a busy school calendar, as well as their eager talent for promoting shows and curating lineups.
